Kidd was born around 1645. He found employment as an English privateer who found success in New York and in the West Indies, that he was called back to England. Kidd was given a job to sail a huge war ship and he recruited a bunch of cutthroat men for a crew, their mission was to capture ships. Capt. Kidd was a Scottish pirate. He is well known because he was hung by the people of Boston. He was also tarred and feathered. This was a warning sign for the other pirates entering Boston. This was done often at this time because people wanted to prove a point that they did not want pirates there.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Kidd allegedly buried his family Bible near Plymouth Sound before his fated voyage. - Kidd buried a large amount of his personal take on Gardiner's Island, at the eastern end of Long Island. - Out of his many years of privateering voyages, only one involved piracy, and that produced only one large haul of loot. In March 1701 after a year in prison at Newgate, a series of swift Admiralty trials ensued. The man now called the pirate Captain Kidd refused to turn state's evidence, his backers had 'lost' all incriminating documents, and he was hung for murder and piracy on May 23. His body was tarred and hung in a cage by the Thames River where it remained for several years as a warning to all others who would consider piracy.

William "Captain" Kidd 1645 – 23 May 170) was a Scottish sailor. He was remembered for his trial and execution for piracy after returning from a voyage to the Indian Ocean. He was born in Dundee, Scotland January 1645. His father was Captain John Kyd. He was lost at sea. A local society supported the family financially. The first records of his life were in 1689, when he was a member of a French-English pirate crew that sailed in the Caribbean. On 16 May 1691, Kidd married Sarah Bradley Cox Oort, an English woman in her early twenties, who had already been twice widowed and was one of the wealthiest women in New York, largely due to her inheritance from her first husband. Prior to Kidd returning to New York City, he learned that he was a wanted pirate, and that several English men-of-war were searching for him. Kidd had two lawyers to assist in his defense. He was charged with murder and found guilty on all charges (murder and five counts of piracy). He was hanged on 23 May 1701, at 'Execution Dock', Wapping, in London. During the execution, the hangman's rope broke and Kidd was hanged on the second attempt. His body was gibbeted over the River Thames at Tilbury Point—as a warning to future would-be pirates for three years. The belief that Kidd had left a buried treasure contributed considerably to the growth of his legend. Captain Kidd did bury a small cache of treasure on Gardiners Island in a spot known as Cherry Tree Field; however, it was removed by Governor Bellomont and sent to England to be used as evidence against him. It was reported on 13 December 2007, that "wreckage of a pirate ship abandoned by Captain Kidd in the 17th century has been found by divers in shallow waters off the Dominican Republic.

ReplyDeleteCaptain William Kidd is not considered to be a good pirate. Many people focus more on his fate, and less of his deeds. I think people are completly wrong. Although he stole and did all these bad actions, does not mean he is a 'bad' pirate. THIS WAS THERE JOB! he was actually one of the GREATEST pirates if you ask me. He got away with a bunch of treasure, and even managed to BURY some... pretty sneaky and pirate like if you ask me. His treasure is said to be buried somewhere in Long Island today. This is why he is so great, still no one can find his treasure.
