  2. Chapter 1 discusses the beginning of dutch occupancy into what was native american New York land. The first dutch ship to enter the harbor that the natives had never seen was known as "half moon". The chapter explains that there was no suez canal separating Asia and Africa which made it very difficult for the dutch to access the East Indie Islands. Therefore when the dutch traveled to the new world they gave Henry Hudson the job of traveling up the hudson in search of the East Indie Islands even though they were really on the other side of the world. Hudson was proud of his discovery and called it the River of the Islands. The leaders of the East India Company were not happy with Hudson's discovery.
In later years when trading began, it was mainly fur that the dutch and indians would trade. A man named Adrian Block arrived on a ship known as The Tiger which they docked in what is now battery manhattan. The ship took fire one night leaving Block and his men to have to live in what was basically wilderness in lower manhattan. They built houses and began to settle for the winter. Soon after came the United New Netherland Company created when all dutch fur trade companies united. The New York City and Long Island area soon became known as New Netherland. The people of Holland soon began to flood the new york city to begin building a city on the island of manhattan.

He had supreme authority over his colonists, who cleared the land of the trees, planted seeds, gathered the ripened grain, and raised cattle which they gave to the Lord of the Manor as rent.

It is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal. Its politics are used to frighten children. Its traffic is madness. Its competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it -- once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no other place is good enough.

—John Steinbeck
