I think Jacob Steendam meant when he called NYC "Eden" was the whole new experience for him. NYC is bright and makes him feel free in a way. NYC is full of different cultures as well as attractions. it makes you feel more civilize as a person. this place called NYC can make your dreams come true. its a place that can have good and evil as well as temptations.

  2. To so many who haven't been in New York and we take it for granted, it truly is an amazing almost magical like place. There's millions of different things to do and the lights in the city are amazing in itself. People come to New York to be successful and accomplish dreams to. Jacob said New York is Eden because there are so many attractions and different people here and there's so much to want to do. New York is a very tempting place, and there's a lot of good things as well as bad things here as well. New York just doesn't stop moving and that's why we're known as the city that never sleeps and I think that's what Jacob felt was amazing about New York.

  3. When Jacob Steendam called NYC, "Eden," he was describing its beauty and the fact that it comes with unlimited freedoms and opportunities. It is filled with temptation similar to Adam and Eve's experience in Eden and it is truly a one of a kind place. As most places in the world, NY does consist of "good" and "evil" and being a citizen allows you to understand the whole experience. The metaphorical statement that Jacob makes is accurate and even though he said it in the 1600s, it is certainly not outdated.

  4. I belive Jacob Steedam called NYC Eden because it reminded him of all the good here as well as how tempting and wants and sins you can develope here. Also probably because of the magical and wounderous expirences that are through out the city.

  5. It is possible that Jacob Steedam made the comment of NYC being similar to Eden in that it is similar to the garden of eden, because it has everything you would need and its inhabitants take their resources, opportunities, freedoms and beauty for granted, just as Adam and Eve, and may even succumb to sin because of their surroundings and temptations just as they did

  6. There are several reasons why New York City can be compared to Eden. The city offers many tempting things to do that can lead people to sin. The city ids filled with forbidden fruit to eat.

  7. When Jacob Steendam called NYC "Eden" I think he was comparing it to the Garden of Eden in the Bible. The Garden of Eden had everything that a human can ask for, resources, freedom, many opportunities, and even temptations. Maybe at the time NYC had everything Jacob Steeddam could ask for even temptations.

  9. I think what the poet meant by "Oh this is Eden", was he was referring to the garden of Eden in the bible. What he means is that anything a person could ever want is in New York City and it's paradise, heaven on earth.

When Jacob Steendam arrived in NYC, he called it the Garden of Eden because it looked like paradise and it didn't seem like there is any harm.

  12. I believe that Jacob meant that New York City is a breeding ground for sin, feeding off the ignorance of the few to add to the problems of the many. It hides behind a veil of glamour and beauty, only to show its true colors in the form of a snake ready to damn your very existence.

  14. In my opinion Jacob Steendam call NYC,"Eden" because it was a whole new world, a whole new experience for him, a new land that he really knew nothing about having just come to the States. He may be referring to all the beauty and opportunities, but then again he could be referring to all of the evils and the temptations all around him.

I believe Jacob Steendam called New York City "Eden" because it was a new place, which was filled with new experiences, and new possibilities. He also could of called it Eden because of the temptations that came with a beatiful place, just like in the bible.

  17. The author refers to Eden as in the Bible, but specifically he relates to the sins in the garden of Eden to those in New York City. He refers to the beauty of New York City and Eden also in the poem.

  18. Jacob Steendam, the author, was referring to Eden as the garden in which adam and eve sinned in and created original sin. I think that he is saying new york is like a place of sin.

I think what Jacob Steendam meant by referring to Eden was to compare the garden where Adam and Eve had sinned to New York. Like New York, we are given many oppurtunities, but tempatation and evils do occur. It can be a beautiful place just as much as a place of troubles.

  21. I believe that Jacob steendam referred to New York as Eden because like the garden of Eden, New York gives you many opportunities but it is what you make of them and how you choose your oppostunities the way your life will go. Like Adam and Eve they could either choose to give into the temptation or not to this is the same as the opportunities in New York

  22. When Jacob Steendam said that New York was like Eden he was referring to the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve both were tempted greatly by the Garden's Fruit. Just like Adam and Eve, the people who came to New York saw this as a very tempting place. New York had it's own " fruits " which were the Native Americans.

  23. I think that Jacob Steendam referred to NYC as Eden because he believed that people saw New York very differently and a place for temptation and new things. This is compared to the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve encountered temptation. In New York City, you are the one who chooses what you want to do. There are many opportunities, and that is why Jacob Steendam referred to NYC as Eden.

It is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal. Its politics are used to frighten children. Its traffic is madness. Its competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it -- once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no other place is good enough.

—John Steinbeck
