NYC Songs

Many songs have been written about New York City. Whether it was about the city itself or life in one of the boroughs, New York has impacted pop culture of many generations.

Tonight you must find a song written about NYC (which can include Brooklyn and other Boroughs). I would like you to look up the lyrics and explain what the writer was discussing in the lyrics about NYC. Is this a true description of NYC and does the description still apply? I would like you to dissect the song and discuss line by line the lyrics. PLEASE BRING TO CLASS TOMORROW!

It is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal. Its politics are used to frighten children. Its traffic is madness. Its competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it -- once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no other place is good enough.

—John Steinbeck
